Abstract:
The presentation will briefly summarize the key physical, biological and anthropogenic characteristics of Caribbean coastal environments and the value of these coastal resources to the economic and social development of the region. It will evaluate the potential risks posed to these assets by global climate change, in particular observed and projected air and sea surface temperatures, sea level rise and related high-energy events. Some critical considerations to inform potential risk-reduction strategies will be identified and examples of adaptation initiatives already being implemented in various parts of the Caribbean will be presented.

Dr. Leonard Nurse is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, where he coordinates the MSc. and PhD programs in climate change and teaches graduate courses coastal dynamics and integrated coastal management.
He has been a Lead Author with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1993, and has published widely on the impact of climate change on small island states. Dr. Nurse is the Coordinating Lead Author for the chapter “Small Islands” in the recently released Fifth Assessment Report of Working Group II of the IPCC.
Prior to becoming a full-time academic, he was Director of the Coastal Zone Management Unit, where he was responsible for the implementation of Barbados’ integrated coastal management programme, which commenced in the 1980’s. Dr. Nurse was a Vice-Chair of the Inter-governmental Oceanographic Commission’s Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (IOCARIBE) during the period 1995-2002. He is currently Chairman, Board of Governors of the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, which is headquartered in Belize.
He is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, Memorial University of Newfoundland and McGill University, Montreal, Canada.
