Shifting perspectives on coastal impacts and adaptation

Scientists and engineers from the University of Southampton, including those involved in the MSc Engineering in the Coastal Environment course, have produced a commentary in Nature Climate Change. Entitled ‘shifting perspectives from impacts to coastal adaptation’ the scientists and engineers have reviewed past IPCC reports focusing on how our understanding of sea-level rise in coastal environments has changed over the 24-year history of IPCC reports.

They found that climate change impacts in the coastal zone are now better understood, but to improve this, more research needs to take account of all human, physical and ecological features that can affect coastal change. Different types of engineering, particularly those that work with nature, can help reduce impacts too.
